TUNNELS INJECTION CASE STUDY

Parsons, Brinkerhoff, Quade and Douglas, Inc. surveyed NFTA’s six mile north and south bound tunnel system for leaking areas. Parsons, Brinkerhoff, Quade and Douglas selected a polyurethane injection resin designed to control water and seal moving non-structural cracks in concrete to be injected into these areas.
The objective of Phase I was to seal 12,000 linear feet of cracks and construction joints. Although the work scheduled was restricted to 140 calender days at 5 hours each day during NFTA’s non-operating hours, JWI crew proceeded well ahead of schedule, NFTA’s representatives elected to increase the contract linear footage by approximately 10,000 linear feet. This additional work was successfully completed by JWI ahead of the original 140 calender day schedule.
For Phase II, 26,900 linear feet of cracks and construction joints needed to be injected. Again, JWI crews were limited to five to eight hour work days and again, the project was completed ahead of the 210 day contract period.
